Yesterday I saw a young woman at the clinic for her initial treatment session. She had been suffering from chronic neck pain for the past 4 years.

She had no idea what had triggered it or what might be causing it. She had been treated by chiropractors and massage therapists with little or no progress to show for it.

The pain was interfering with her work and a teacher. It was also limiting her ability to enjoy her active lifestyle of running, biking, skiing and working out.

The pain was primarily localized at the base of her neck on both sides, however it was generally more intense on the left, and sometimes radiated down the back of her arm.

Her Neurosomatic postural assessment revealed a leg length inequality of 7mm on the right. In other words, the femur bone of her right leg was 7mm shorter than her left, and it was causing everything from her hips up to tilt down to the right when she stood.

Her head was correcting for all this by tilting back to the left. This indicated a significant amount of compression on the left side of the neck, and the distinct possibility that muscle spasm and trigger point formation here were the source of the neck pain.

After performing some myofascial release on the head and neck to soften up the superfical tissue, we were able to find the culprits – the left posterior scalene, and scalene minimus.

Just 20 minutes of treatment was enough to get this muscle to ease up and diminish her pain significantly!

We both agreed that this was a big win for the first session, however there is still more work to be done. With just a few weeks of wearing her lift, and a few more bi-weekly treatment sessions, she should be completely pain free and ready to enjoy her life again.
